Is it for an elderly family member? Will it strictly be used by guests? Are you looking to rent it out? The answer to these questions will go a long way in determining the direction of the ADU design. For example, if you are building it for an aging family member, you may want to include things like a roll-in shower, low thresholds, and wider-than-standard hallways and doorways. If it will be a rental unit, you’ll want to consider things like more durable finishes and features that will allow to charge a higher monthly rent, such as a small second bedroom or office, or a dedicated parking space. If it will be used exclusively as guest quarters, you may not need a full kitchen or a lot of closet/storage space, but you may want to add built-in bunk beds or give it a more hotel-like look and feel.
